Americans United for Life Action: Nominating Governor Sebelius to HHS is Offensive and Divisive

Washington, DC -- Today President Obama is expected to nominate Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be Secretary of the U.S.Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

As a member of the Kansas House and later as Governor, Gov. Sebelius has a long history of opposing and even vetoing measures such as parental involvement for a daughter’s abortion;  informed consent; medically-supported health and safety standards for abortion clinics; and reasonable limits on late-term abortions.

Dr. Charmaine Yoest, AUL Action President & CEO said, “Nominating someone with an extremist record on abortion who is also associated with the most notorious abortionist in America to be Secretary of Health and Human Services is offensive.  This is a politically divisive move.  The Senate should reject this polarizing nomination.”

Gov. Sebelius hosted infamous late-term abortionist George Tiller at the Kansas Governor’s mansion in April 2007.  For more on Governor Sebelius’ record and her relationship with George Tiller, see  http://blog.aul.org/2009/03/01/the-case-against-sebelius-unfit-to-serve-as-hhs-secretary/.

Daniel McConchie, Vice President of AUL Action said, “AUL Action will score the Senate confirmation vote on Governor Sebelius’ nomination.”
