Dear Friend,

The fight to remove the abortion mandate from the health care bill is becoming more intense by the hour., Pro-life Democrat Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) is making headlines with his announcement that 40 Democrats are prepared to block health care reform legislation from coming to the House Floor unless its abortion mandate is removed.

Here at AUL Action, we are working against time to support the efforts of Stupak and other pro-lifers on the Hill, meeting with Congressmen to ensure they know what’s at stake if the health care reform bill is not amended to protect life.

Even as House members express determination to remove abortion from the House bill, in our meetings we have learned that Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic leadership are working hard to convince pro-life members of Congress that the Capps Amendment “compromise” prevents abortion funding and coverage.

Please, call your Congressman and tell him/her that the Capps Amendment is not a compromise. The Stupak/Pitts language must be included in the House bill.

We need to get the word out: health care reform is simply unacceptable unless the final bill contains an explicit provision barring abortion funding and coverage.

Please visit our Team Life Action Center to find out how you can make a difference in your community! When you sign up to join Team Life, we will work with you, providing resources to help you educate your friends and family about how to stop your tax dollars from paying for abortion in health care reform.

Our online ad "Don't Be Fooled: Abortion is in Health Care Reform” shows how abortion advocates are trying to use health care reform as a means of forcing Americans to pay for the destruction of unborn life. Please watch it on RealHealthCareRespectsLife.com and send it to your friends, your family—everyone you know who doesn’t want to see their tax dollars fund abortion-on-demand.

This health care reform debate is a critical time in the history of the pro-life movement, as the fates of millions of unborn lives hang in the balance.

Thank you for your support as we work together to protect and defend life!

For Life,

The Truth About the Hyde Amendment Is Coming Out

Pro-abortion politicians have made numerous misleading claims about abortion in health care. Twice in recent weeks, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has insisted to reporters that the Hyde Amendment is sufficient to prevent federal funds from subsidizing abortion. As the group that defended the Hyde Amendment before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1980, Americans United for Life knows well that the Hyde Amendment will not prevent abortion funding through the current health care proposals. Fortunately, the disinformation campaign in the mainstream media was shattered last week when Associated Press began reporting the truth about the Hyde Amendment:

“Currently a law called the Hyde amendment bars federal funding for abortion — except in cases of rape and incest or if the mother’s life would be endangered — and applies those restrictions to Medicaid, forcing states that cover abortion for low-income women to do so with their own money. Separate laws apply the restrictions to the federal employee health plan and military and other programs.

But the Democrats’ health overhaul bill would create a new stream of federal funding not covered by the restrictions.”

How The Public Option Will Allow Abortion in Health Care

Senate Majority Leader Reid announced that he will include a "public option" (government-run insurance plan) in the final Senate health care reform bill. While the language of the final Senate bill, like the final House bill, is not available for public consumption, it is not hard to predict what the inclusion of a "public option" means for abortion funding and coverage. Please read more here about the 'public option' on our AUL blog.
